Plans by a multi-national chain to convert a prominent Carlisle hotel have been welcomed.

An application has been made to turn the County Hotel, on Botchergate, into an 84-room Holiday Inn Express.

The proposals, put to Carlisle City Council, include “a full refurbishment of all floors to upgrade the accommodation in line with current standards”.

Colin Glover, leader of the council, said it was good news that there was continued strong interest in the city.

“It is always great when we see big name businesses wanting to be part of the growing offering in Carlisle.

“It’s an important location, right opposite the train station.

“Carlisle is a city that is confident in going forward and it’s good news when we see people want to be part of that.”

A statement written by architects ICA Ltd on behalf of the applicant – The Cairn Group – says the Grade II-listed hotel would have 84 bedrooms and be redesigned.

“As part of the Intercontinental Hotel Group, the new County Hotel will provide accommodation for both business and family or leisure clients,” it adds.

Holiday Inn Express is international hotel giant IHG’s fastest growing hotel brand.
