Two children had to be rescued by the coastguard after getting trapped on a cliff.

Whitehaven Coastguard were called out shortly before 3pm today to a cliff at St Bees South Head.

when they arrived at the scene they were met by the youngster's family members at the base of the cliff and saw the children trapped about 50 metres from sea level.

A team spokesman said: "The team set up a technical rope rescue above the two casualties and a rope rescue technician was lowered to the priority casualty who was in a more precarious position.

"The casualty was secured into into a rescue sling and checked over for injuries, before being lowered to waiting coastguard rescue officers. The technician return to repeat the procedure for the second casualty."

Both children were recovered safely and were uninjured, however, both were left shaken and upset by the ordeal.

The spokesman added: "With school holidays and the finer weather now here, this goes to show the importance of members of the public adhering to all danger signage and fencing around cliff and coastal area."

Coastguard teams from Maryport and Millom supported the rescue.
