Carlisle's pedestrian shopping area will be blocked off while repairs are carried out to bollards.

Vehicle access onto Scotch Street from West Tower Street will be banned from today to allow Cumbria County Council to do the work.

For public safety the centre of Scotch Street, the city's shopping hub, will be fenced off between West Tower Street and The Lanes shopping centre.

People will still be able to use the footpaths either side. The work is expected to last two days.

The area was cordoned off in July for about two weeks while work was done to the paving.

An alternative route for vehicles will be signposted.

A county council spokesman said: "Any stores that require deliveries will have to gain access via Castle Street and English Street; the bollards on English Street will be lowered for the duration of the works to accommodate this.

"I would also ask that you liaise with site staff for the detail or contact the number below if you have any specific requirements.

"Your patience and co-operation in this matter is appreciated."
