A Carlisle musician is driving his 90-year-old car - which has a top speed of 50mph - on a 3,000-mile journey around the country to raise £10,000 for Pancreatic Cancer Action.

Andy McKay, 66, lost his wife to the disease in 2013 and is desperate to raise awareness to help save lives.

He set off on his mammoth journey, waved off by Carlisle Mayor Trish Vasey, in his 90-year-old Morris Cowley he names Happy Henry.

He said: "Tragically, I lost my wife, Lyn, in 2013 to this dreadful disease whose survival rate has only improved marginally in the last 40 years. "There is no cure and the only chance of survival is by diagnosing very early.

"That is what Pancreatic Cancer Action is all about - recognising symptoms and getting early diagnosis.

"I am a musician and will be performing gigs en route. I will be away for up to two months with my glamorous assistant, Paddy, a four year old Cocker Spaniel.

"So far I’ve raised nearly £3,000 so have a long way to go."

Mr McKay's first stop was Kendal.

"I popped into the Lakeland Motor Museum and then headed down to Lytham St Anne's where I played a gig," he said.

"I've got accommodation booked until tomorrow (Tuesday) and I will also attend a steam gathering in Worcestershire on my travels."

The car has a hood to protect Mr McKay in the rain.

He said: "It can travel at about 50mph but I don't take it on the motorway."

Mr McKay, of Morton, has a long-standing relationship with Happy Henry, having first spotted the car in 1974.

He finally bought it in 2014 from eBay.
