Officers investigating a machete attack on a man in Carlisle are hunting for a car they believe is connected to the incident.

Cumbria police is trying to locate a red Renault Clio with the registration number ND51 JYU and would like to know the whereabouts of the vehicle or hear from anyone who has seen it.

It is believed that the car is connected to the attack, during which the 19-year-old victim suffered serious injuries to his hand.

It happened yesterday in the Norfolk Street and Westmorland Street area of Denton Holme.

Two men, aged 25 and 22 and both from Carlisle, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and are still being detained for questioning.

Following the arrests, Superintendent Matt Kennerley, of Cumbria Constabulary, said: “Officers have worked throughout the night conducting enquiries into this serous assault.

“I would like to reassure members of the public that, following the arrests of two men this morning, we are not looking for any further suspects at this time.”

Police cordoned off a section of the Norfolk Street and Westmorland Street area yesterday following the attack.

Residents living nearby told of seeing a man with an injured hand.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

One man who lives in nearby Teasdale Court told the News & Star: “I heard that there had been some trouble in Westmorland Street so I went out immediately to get my son in.

"There were two lads standing in the street, and one of them had an injured hand.

“It was wrapped in something. You could see the blood.

“It didn't look good. I asked him if he was okay and he said something about somebody coming at him with a machete.”
