It was a little later than originally planned, but a Carlisle couple finally said “I do” as they tied the knot.

Kevin Phillips and Siobhon Robinson, from Botcherby, had been due to get married in July, but a month before their big day things took a dramatic turn when Kevin was knocked off his bike while cycling on the A66 near Penruddock.

He was left with a fractured skull in seven places, bleeding on his brain and eight blood clots. Two large pieces of glass were also lodged in his right arm. He was released from Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary on July 18 - just four days before the couple were due to marry.

Kevin, who has been left without a sense of taste or smell, says he cannot remember any of what happened on that fateful day.

The injuries he sustained could have been far worse, were nt not for the help he received from medics at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

But, more than six months on and surrounded by family and friends, Kevin and Siobhan married in the registration office at Lady Gillford’s House.

“I’m absolutely over the moon,” Siobhan, 26, told the News & Star after the couple exchanged promises. “We’ve waited a long time for this to happen and it’s been an emotional time.”

Watching on were the couple’s three children - daughters Orla and Poppy and son William. As a special thank you, Kevin and Siobhon also invited doctor Andrew Barrington from the GNAAS to help celebrate as well.

“It still hasn’t really sunk in,” Kevin 41, added, joking: “I’m just glad that I managed to stay calm.”

After the couple, the headed off to the Shepherds Inn, at Rosehill. “We’ve got our evening guests coming along,” Siobhon said.

The celebrations are still continuing, as yesterday the newlyweds headed off north of the border for their honeymoon. Siobhon continued: “We’re going off to Edinburgh for a few days. We’re really looking forward to it, it should be good.”
