Children from a nursery in Dalston waddled their way to their local secondary school for a story session.

Youngsters from St Michael's Pre-School Nursery walked to Caldew School to act out scenes from some of their favourite books.

Year 10 pupils at Caldew School created story sacks based on the popular children's books The Tiger Who Came To Tea, Goldilocks and The Three Bears, We're Going On A Bear Hunt and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Cheryl Eastburn, enterprise and marketing manager at Caldew School, said: "The whole event was just lovely.

"Our Year 10 health and social students made fantastic story sacks to entertain the little ones.

"They went on a bear hunt in the library through the forest and a snow storm. There was even a pop up tent.

"The Tiger Who Came to Tea featured a tea party and a cake and the Very Hungry Caterpillar sack featured butterfly masks and lots of fruit which the children counted."

The scheme saw pupils old and young working together.

"It was really nice," said Cheryl.

"Our pupils have been invited to go down to the pre-school at the recreation centre to see the children and work a bit more with them."

After the event, the 21 children went for a picnic lunch before toddling back to their pre-school.

They were taking part in Barnardo's Big Toddle.

Jo Short, nursery and pre-school manager of St Michael's, said: "The Big Toddle is an annual event that we do.

"It was great fun to see the children out in the community.

"They had a lovely time exploring the story sacks and when we got back to nursery we had a vote on which was best. They said they loved The Hungry Caterpillar.

"We've invited the child development class to come back to nursery and spend some time with the children. It's great to build up partnerships.

"After the event we had a picnic on the field of the primary school."
