Alice In Wonderland, Oliver Twist and The Sleekit Mr Tod were all seen wandering the corridors of Seaton Academy.

Children and staff all dressed up as book characters as part of their book week.

Debbie Midwood, literary coordinator and assistant head for key stage one, said: "We've had a whole book week which culminated in this dressing up day. We've had a Cumbrian poet, Katie Haile, coming in this week to do poetry with the children. They had to come up with their own poems and use similes. The theme was items washed up on the beach, what they look like, how they smell.

"We also had David Cryer from Theatre By The Lake coming to do a Secret Garden workshop, because that is their Christmas production. The children got to act out part of the play and read parts of the script and experience what it would be like to be an actor."

Parents, grandparents and carers also went to the school to read books with the children.

Pupils held book swaps and also brought in their favourite books.

Mrs Midwood said: "They have absolutely loved it and I think that seeing the staff dressed up is something they will remember forever.

"They enjoyed the poetry because they could use their imagination and it will often surprise you with what they come up with.

"They've all enjoyed the activities this week."

Children also visited the village's library and prizes were given to the children with the best costumes.

Josh Meckin, four, was very proud of his version of as the tiger in The Tiger Who Came To Tea, complete with a mask and a tail.

He said: "I really like this book, it's my favourite."

And Charlie Irving, five, was dressed as Stick Man. He said: "My mummy and daddy helped me make the costume. It's my favourite book but we don't only read it at bedtime."
