A new bereavement support group for parents will launch this weekend.

It will be run by Team Evie, the charity set up by Great Broughton couple Greg and Jill Johnston after the death of their six-month-old daughter in 2015.

The couple are determined that her short life will stand for something positive and – with friends, family and complete strangers – have raised thousands of pounds to help families with sick children.

Most recently they donated a mobile library to the children’s ward at the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.

The latest venture will be open to all parents who have suffered the loss of a child, whether recently or historically.

They are working with health visitor Helen Westwood, who is qualified and keen to support bereaved parents.

Organisers intend that it will provide them with the chance to meet others who have had similar experiences and gain support from them.

An open day will take place at Victoria Hall, High Sand Lane, Cockermouth tomorrow from 11am to 3pm and will offer the chance to pop in, informally, for a drink and a chat.

Team Evie will set up regular group meetings in Cockermouth to encourage and support bereaved parents and families.

Mr Johnston said following Evie’s death the family found that there was little support in Cumbria to help bereaved parents.

He added: “Losing a child can often leave parents feeling lonely and isolated.

“Our group will tackle this and give parents a safe, friendly environment to meet others and support each other.

“We are starting with our open day to meet as many parents as possible who can come down and have a cuppa with us.”
