An action group is appealing for motorists to take extra care on a busy fell road.

Drivers are being urged to slow down on Cold Fell and be more cautious of livestock – especially as hundreds of lambs are being put out to graze.

Posters have now been created to promote the Fell Road Code and are being handed out to drivers and local businesses.

Sellafield Ltd is working with the Cold Fell Action Group to educate its workers as many of them use the 8.5-mile stretch of road, which connects Ennerdale Bridge and Calderbridge.

Bob Jones, chairman of the action group, said: "The majority of drivers are fine, but everybody needs to be reminded now and then.

"There's still a few people who don't drive responsibly. It's not just for the welfare of the livestock, it's also about keeping people safe."

Over the years, many sheep, cows and horses have been injured or killed along the 8.5-mile stretch of road which connects Ennerdale Bridge and Calderbridge.

This year, the action group has updated its Fell Road Code, which was introduced 10 years ago.

The code is supported by Cumbria Police and the county council.

It includes a list of bullet points that drivers should be aware of, including taking extra care passing cyclists, walkers and animals; being tolerant if slow-moving agricultural vehicles and giving way to vehicles coming uphill.

It is also encouraging drivers to avid driving through road closed signs.

Mr Jones added: "Every year we promote safe driving as the young lambs are going out so there's a greater risk.

"We want people to take extra care on the roads."

The speed limit on the road was reduced to 40mph in 2011 following a lengthy campaign by the action group.
