A last call for entries for a dry stone walling competition in the Lake District has been made.

Organised by landscape charity Friends of the Lake District, the competition will take place at Low Beckside Farm in Mungrsidale on May 18.

Explaining the competition and the history of dry stone walking, organiser Kay Andrews said: "Dry stone walling is a heritage skill and the walls are an important part of Cumbria's cultural identity.

“Our annual walling competition is a terrific opportunity for anyone, from a novice to a skilled professional, to show off their skills.

“It's always fascinating and very satisfying to see how a pile of stones at the start of the day can be so skilfully built into a beautiful structure which will last another generation and more, and dry stone walls aren’t just pretty landscape features, they are vital for creating boundaries and as habitats for all kinds of wildlife, so it’s important that we’re helping keep this skill alive."

Patrick Lacey, secretary of the Cumbrian branch of the Dry Stone Walling Association, said: “On the day we’ll be bringing lots of information on dry stone walling, training opportunities and our mini-walling kits for young people to try their hand at it.

“For adults, we’ll also be providing a ‘have-a-go’ taster on the real wall, showing people the core principles of how a dry stone wall is constructed.”
