Traffic lights and road closures continue to be place across Carlisle as progress continues on the Carlisle Southern Link Road.

Wreay Road and Peter Lane are closed for the whole week and traffic lights are in place on Newbiggin Road, the Brisco Crossroads with some arriving on Dalston Road on Saturday.

Peter Lane has been closed on several occasions during the large scale works to facilitate drainage works associated with the new road whilst there will be no access to Newbiggin Road from Wreay Road during this period to enable works associated with the new Brisco roundabout.

Work began on this major infrastructure project in June 2023 after more than £200 million of investment from both local and national government.

The 8km road includes four new roundabouts, five cycle bridges, four road bridges, and an entire length cycle path on its northern side.

The route will include bridges over two main railway lines and the Caldew and Petteril rivers.

In December, the project saw the installation of stone foundations for the new roundabout near Brisco and the link road at Durdar, the completion of the main sections of the flood relief culvert near the Caldew, and the installment of the steel beams on the Peastree Farm bridge, whilst in February, the build saw continued drainage works, concrete pours for the abutments of the Durdar Road bridge, along with the installation of the beams.

Additionally, works associated with the West Coast Main Line bridge were also undertaken.

The Carlisle Southern Link Road Project was given approval by Government back in 2016/17, but was subsequently hit with difficulties around the rising costs associated with the supply chain, labour and material shortages and rising energy costs.

The southern link road could see cars travel on the new road as early as next year.
