AMAZON PRIME. FALLOUT (2024)

News and Star: Fallout Fallout (Image: Supplied)

Fallout is a Cracking TV show based on the 1997 computer game series. Starring Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Kyle MacLachlan, and a talented ensemble cast, this Amazon Prime Video series takes us on a twisted journey through a retrofuturistic post-apocalyptic world. Set in an alternate history of Earth, the show explores the aftermath of a devastating nuclear exchange that occurred after WWII.

The series showcases a retrofuturistic society that emerged from advances in nuclear technology, leading to a resource war. In this desolate world, the survivors sought refuge in fallout bunkers called Vaults, designed to preserve humanity in the face of nuclear annihilation.

The story follows a young woman who leaves her home in Vault 33 to embark on a perilous journey through the unforgiving wasteland of a devastated Los Angeles in search of her father. Although I have never played the game that the series is based on, I am familiar with the recognizable brand and its merchandise.

The trailer for the show immediately caught my attention, as it promised a post-apocalyptic Western that reminded me of 80s Italian action films that I enjoyed in my youth, albeit with a larger budget.

Eager to provide a timely review for my column, I wasted no time in diving into the series as soon as it premiered on April 11. Fallout delivers a fantastic blend of humor, stylish violence, and action plus plenty of twists.

The first episode serves as an effective introduction to the main characters and their adversaries, setting the stage for what's to come. One thing I particularly enjoyed about the series is its retro-futuristic 50s-style tech, reminiscent of "The Jetsons," but set in a post-apocalyptic Earth filled with mutants, monsters, and the constant threat of violence.

The combination of practical and CGI effects helps to make the world of the series feel real, while the wild and eccentric characters we encounter along the way add a delightful touch of unpredictability.

The cast is exceptional all of whom bring their A-game to their respective roles. The main cast, in particular, delivers superb performances that truly elevate the series. It's worth mentioning that while some may compare this to the successful video game adaptation "The Last of Us," this show is its beast.

After watching the series, I find myself eager to delve into the games that inspired it, as the storytelling and execution of this were excellent. Without revealing too much, I can assure you that Fallout offers a gripping and well-acted story that will leave you wanting more. The blend of action, drama, and the exploration of a post-apocalyptic world make for an enthralling watch.

If you're a fan of the game series or simply enjoy this kind of thing, this TV adaptation is not to be missed. It’s a visually stunning and compelling TV show that successfully brings a beloved game series to life.

With its retrofuturistic setting, engaging story, and stellar performances. I highly recommend this, as it will leave you captivated from beginning to end. So grab your Pip-Boy, tune in to Amazon Prime Video, and immerse yourself in the Post Apocalyptic World of Fallout.

WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE (1986)

News and Star: Dead or AliveDead or Alive (Image: Supplied)

This is an action film written and directed by Gary Sherman. Starring Rutger Hauer, Gene Simmons, William Russ, Robert Guillaum, and introducing Mel Harris, this movie follows the story of Nick Randall, a Los Angeles-based bounty hunter, and ex-CIA operative.

Randall is approached by a former co-worker to help track down the terrorist Malak Al-Rahim, who has bombed a movie theater and plans to release gas from a chemical plant, reminiscent of the Bhopal disaster.

However, Al-Rahim is also after Randall, and his employers betray him, leading to the tragic deaths of his best friend, Sergeant Danny Quintz, and his girlfriend Terry. This sets the stage for a thrilling showdown on the waterfront.

In a Cracking performance, Rutger Hauer portrays Nick Randall, a character who is the descendant of Steve McQueen's Josh Randall from the 1958 television series of the same name. This demonstrates that turning old TV shows into movies is not a new concept.

Rutger Hauer, a massive star at the time, delivers a great performance in this and adds a bit of weight to the film. Adding to the star power, KISS Rocker Gene Simmons takes on the role of the scenery-chewing villain, a role he excelled at in the 80s.

His portrayal in this film, as well as in Runaway (1984) and Never Too Young to Die (1986), are highly entertaining and worth watching.

One of the highlights of Wanted: Dead or Alive is its top cast, which is filled with some great actors from the 80s. The film captures the essence of the era, from its soundtrack featuring the iconic 80s smokey saxophone to the fashion choices of the characters.

It is a true gem of an 80s action classic. It’s an underrated action film that showcases the talent of Rutger Hauer and Gene Simmons. With its very 80s storyline and decent cast, it drops the viewers into the thrilling world of a bounty hunter facing off against a terrorist.

If you're a fan of 80s films or enjoy good action flicks, this movie is a must-watch. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and prepare for an explosive experience.

Soulcatcher. (2023)

News and Star: SoulcatcherSoulcatcher (Image: Supplied)

Soulcatcher is a thrilling Polish action film directed by Daniel Markowicz and starring Piotr Witkowski, among others. As a fan of the director and lead actor's previous work in the excellent Netflix film Lesson Plan, I was excited to watch this movie, which is also available on Netflix with the option of subtitles or English dubbing.

I don't mind dubbed films, although I understand that they may not be everyone's cup of tea. The film kicks off with a group of mercenaries on a mission to rescue a girl. However, things take a turn for the worse when some of the mercenaries become mindless zombies due to a mysterious military weapon used by the island's warlord.

This sets the stage for a gripping and action-packed storyline. One aspect that I liked was the film's fantastic soundtrack, filled with some cracking rock tunes. Additionally, the movie offers a great sense of humor, particularly through the witty and wisecracking pilot character.

Like many mission-based movies, our hero must assemble a new team to return to the island, take down the despot, and capture the weapon. The film is well-acted and well-made, although it does slow down a bit in a few instances.

However, once the action picks up again, it quickly regains its momentum, surprising viewers with an unexpected twist. While the film is overall enjoyable, I did have a minor qualm with some of the CGI effects.

In particular, certain explosions and fire effects looked somewhat reminiscent of computer games. The Soulcatcher weapon featured in the movie reminded me of the sound-emitting SIM cards from the first "Kingsman" film but only in Cannon form.

Soulcatcher is a decent watch that I thoroughly enjoyed. If you appreciate a good action film, I highly recommend giving it a go. With its engaging storyline, strong performances, and unexpected twists, it offers an entertaining experience for fans of action films.

TWISTED METAL (2023)

News and Star: Twisted MetalTwisted Metal (Image: Supplied)

Twisted Metal is a fantastic TV show adaptation of the popular Playstation video game franchise. Adapted for TV by the talented duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, known for their work on the Zombieland and Deadpool franchises, this series brings the post-apocalyptic world of Twisted Metal to life.

Starring Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Thomas Hayden Church, Mike Mitchell, and more, it boasts an impressive cast. Set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland following a devastating cyber attack, cities have transformed into fortified fortresses, leaving criminals exiled to lawless areas outside the city walls.

In this desolate world, we meet John Doe, a talkative milkman with amnesia, who embarks on a dangerous mission to deliver a mysterious package across the desolate United States. Along the way, he encounters ruthless marauders and deadly vehicles, all while facing life-altering choices.

As a fan of the original game, I was initially skeptical about how well the TV adaptation would capture the essence of the gaming experience. However, I can confidently say that Twisted Metal is a cracking adaptation that exceeds expectations.

It is filled with non-stop action from start to finish over its 10 half-hour episodes, making it a thrilling and captivating watch. One of the highlights of the series is the inclusion of the weird and bizarre characters from the game.

Among them, the standout is undoubtedly the insane clown known as Sweet Tooth. His presence adds an extra layer of twisted madness to the show, making it a must-watch for fans of the game.

With a total runtime of around three hours, Twisted Metal is perfect for a binge-watching session. However, it's important to note that this show is not suitable for kids due to its computer game-style violence and occasional use of profanity.

It's a relentless onslaught of action that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout though. Adding to the overall experience is the killer soundtrack, filled with great 90s tunes that you might catch yourself singing along to.

It adds a nostalgic touch that enhances the show. This first season sets up a premise that promises even more excitement in future seasons, bringing the show closer to the game. It's a thrilling ride that will leave you eagerly anticipating what's to come.

I've had the pleasure of watching this show twice—once upon its original release in the States and again when it premiered in the UK. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend giving it a watch on Paramount Plus.

It's a superb adaptation that captures the heart of the game and delivers an action-packed, exhilarating experience that will leave you craving for more. It’s a fantastic TV show adaptation that successfully translates the thrills of the popular video game franchise to the small screen.

With its gripping storyline, standout performances, and adrenaline-fueled action, it's a must-watch for fans of the game and anyone looking for an exciting and entertaining TV Show.

So buckle up, tune in, and prepare for a wild ride through the twisted world of Twisted Metal on Paramount Plus.

The romance in the film feels natural and not forced, which is a testament to the skillful writing and direction. The film strikes the perfect balance between romance and comedy, ensuring that both aspects are executed flawlessly.

From start to finish, it captivated me with its clever writing, superb direction, and superb cast. It also boasts an incredible soundtrack that fits the film like a glove. The film's fish-out-of-water concept is executed brilliantly, making it an ideal choice for a cozy movie night with your significant other.

It’s a heartwarming romantic comedy that hits all the right notes. With its charming storyline, excellent performances, and a touch of comedy, it is a film that will leave you with a smile on your face. So grab a blanket, snuggle up on the couch, and let this delightful film sweep you off your feet.
