Fire crews were called out early on Sunday morning to help a 'stricken' Doberman on the bank of the River Eden.

Crews from Carlisle East and Carlisle West Fire Station were called at around 12.45am to near Trinity School Carlisle after Cooper the Doberman had fallen down an eight foot ledge.

Cooper was unable to get back up and his owner was unable to safely travel down the ledge.

Fire crews used ladders to help Cooper back to safety and he was unharmed.

A spokesperson for Carlisle East Fire Station said: "At approximately 12.45am, appliances from Carlisle East and Carlisle West Fire Station were mobilised to reports of a dog that was trapped, having fallen off an 8 foot ledge onto the bank of the River Eden behind Trinity School.

"In attendance crews were greeted by the owner of a Doberman named Cooper, who told us his dog was stuck fast.

"Crews used ladders to carry the stricken dog (who was looking a bit ruff) back to safety- thankfully unharmed, but definitely a bit shaken by his ordeal."
