IN this edition of nostalgia, we are looking back at photos from Women's Institute groups in Cumbria throughout the years.

These nostalgic photos show members from Women's Institute groups from over the years.

The WI has been inspiring women for over 100 years. Formed in 1915, the Women's Institute was originally brought to life to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War.

Since then the organisation's aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women's organisation in the UK

The Cumbria-Cumberland Federation of WI's stretches from Alston in the north along Hadrian's Wall , through Carlisle, out to the ports of Maryport, Workington , Whitehaven and as far south as Bootle.

There are around 62 WIs with approx 1400 members in Cumbria-Cumberland. The Cumbria-Cumberland Federation of WI's was first registered as a charity on March 16 1965.

Cleator Women's Institute has just celebrated its 96th year. The W.I. held a gathering at Cleator WI, with invited guests from Seascale, Lamplugh, and Woodend & District WIs.

Filled with nostalgia, attendees paid tribute to the original WI members by wearing hats, symbolising the formal attire at historical meetings.

In these Cumbrian photos, there are images showing flower shows and darts competitions. The photos show children who entered Brigham WI flower show in 1976, as well as members of Santon Bridge WI who took part in the county darts final in 1976.

Others show the WI flower show held in Maryport in 1977 and members of Kirkbride WI who took part in the county darts final in 1976
