A military records expert is set to decode The National Archives (TNA) in a talk at Carlisle Castle.

Cumbria's Museum of Military Life will host a session by William Spencer on April 9 where he will reveal what all the letters and numbers used by TNA mean and how best to use the sources it holds.

Titled Unlocking the Jigsaw Puzzle: Military Records in the National Archives, the event will be held at 6pm.

Mr Spencer, who served for 13 years in the Fleet Air Arm, will reveal what all the letters and numbers used by The National Archives mean and how best to use sources it holds.

Tickets for this event are priced at £5 when booked in advance and £6 at the door.

Reservations for the evening can be made by calling the museum at (01228) 532774, emailing them at enquiries@cmoml.org, or by visiting their website at https://bit.ly/48hd2iS.

Mr Spencer also served in operational service on 848 Naval Air Squadron in the Falklands, before joining TNA in 1993.

Having authored several books about the records at Kew, including guides to the First World War records and records concerning medals, he left TNA in 2018.
