A HISTORIC Cockermouth building has failed to sell at auction.

Castle Brewery on Brewery Lane, Cockermouth, formerly home of the Jennings Brewery company, failed to materialise with an online sale at an auction with SDL Property on March 27.

It had been listed with a guide price of £750,000.

SDL Property Auctions confirmed the 63,125 sq ft site will remain on their website for any post-auction interest.

It was announced in September 2022 that the brewery, which had been in operation for close to 200 years, would close its doors, with owners Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company moving their operations to Staffordshire in the same month.

The decision was made, under CEO Paul Davies, following a careful evaluation of all available options amidst a dramatic decrease in the brewery’s operating capacity in recent years.

He cited the pandemic's effect as having profoundly compounded the problem.
