One of Britain’s most haunted castles has revealed a new immersive experience that will take you back hundreds of years.

Just 41 days after closing their beloved Meadow Vole Maze, Muncaster Castle has unveiled a new indoor training ground, where visitors will tackle medieval weapons skills under the guidance of experts.

The Medieval Weapons Hall has purpose-built ranges for archery, crossbows and axe throwing along with a sword skills cage and a miniature simulated “jousting” arena.

The immersive experience features armour and weapons with instructors dressed up in Medieval style. Getting stuck in with the fun is also a great way of learning more about what life was like so many years ago.

The Weapons Hall at Muncaster Castle has been one of the biggest developments at the famous castle for many years and officially launched Wednesday March 27.

Ewan Frost-Pennington, manager of operations and part of the family who have lived at Muncaster for over 800 years, said: "Bringing this new experience to fruition has taken such a lot of hard work by all the team here and we’ve also had crucial funding support from the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership – so we would like to thank all those who have been involved.

“I’m confident visitors will love it. But it’s been a big investment and it’s my biggest gamble since taking over the reins at Muncaster – so I’m feeling the pressure."

The activities are suitable for adults as well as children from the ages of eight years and upwards. It will be available for corporate events and private parties and includes a medieval tavern and coffee bar.

Weapon’s Hall Master James Ferguson moved to Cumbria when he took up his position at Muncaster but was formerly an archer at Sherwood Forest.

He said: “I love everything Medieval so when I heard about the job here I jumped at the chance. The Weapon’s Hall has turned out really well, it’s beyond anything we expected."
