A Cumbrian nursery has raised £800 for charity with its 'Bunny Hop' Easter fundraiser.

This week, children from Abacus Day Nursery in Dalston have completed an obstacle course in homemade bunny ears to raise money for their neighbouring charity, Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland.

Children from the Baby Owls, Little Cubs, Big Bears and Big Badgers classes were joined by Hugo the Hospice at Home sheep on Tuesday morning.

The fundraiser was originally planned as a trial, but the response has been incredible so far, bringing in £800 in online JustGiving donations with more still to come.

Hospice at Home said: "We are really thankful to Abacus Nursery for trialling this event with us this Easter. We are over the moon with how all the children have got on board and help to raise so much money. We hope to roll out this event across more nurseries and schools next year and we invite any nursery or school to get in contact if they would like to take part.

"Caring for your community can start at any age, as shown by the lovely children at Abacus. We would like to thank the staff and parents for helping the children to become great ambassadors for us."

Sam Strong, general manager at Abacus, said: "This week our children at Abacus Children’s Day Nursery have been joining in with a sponsored bunny hop/jump/skip/run/crawl. This event has been designed to be a fun and physical activity that the children enjoyed taking part with their friends.

"The money we have raised for Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakeland is an extremely important contribution as this will support and provide a lifeline to families throughout our community.

"The children enjoyed decorating their own bunny ears so that they could wear them when they take part in the Bunny Hop. Each child received a personalised certificate for taking part. I would like to thank all the families that have already kindly given donations so far and a huge well done for all the children who have taken part as they have thoroughly enjoyed it."
