The Manor passed into the ownership of the Dacre family in the 15th century and shortly afterwards by marriage to the immensely powerful Howards, the family of the Dukes of Norfolk.

When the present owners began their restoration of the house 30 years ago, they discovered that the builders had followed an ancient custom and placed four horse skulls under the floorboards to bring the house and its owners’ good fortune.

Dufton Hall and Apartment are offered for sale freehold through the Penrith Office of H&H Land & Estates with a guide price of £725,000.

H&H land and estates valuer, Grace Oakey suggests that whoever succeeds in securing the ownership of the house and its history can count themselves ‘fortunate’.

“Dufton Hall offers a genuinely unique combination of versatile family accommodation, charm and character, contemporary convenience, in a fabulous rural village setting,” said Grace.
