A Carlisle vets has paid tribute to a pet dog who worked in the practice and helped save lives with his blood donations.

Coomara Veterinary Practice shared the news that Woody sadly passed away at the end of February, having spent the last 10 years working there after rescuing him from Oak Tree Animals Charity in 2014.

On Facebook, they wrote: "The team at Coomara have to share the sad news that Woody, who many of you will know from his work for the practice, passed away two weeks ago.

"Not only was he a beloved family member, he also did important work for Coomara.

"His gentle calm character allowed him to act as a blood donor, saving more than one life over the years.

"That same wonderful character meant, dressed in his signature blue bandana, he was a perfect ambassador on visits to schools and nurseries, where he helped our vets and nurses to teach the children how to be safe around dogs, both at home and out-and-about.

"He was always wonderfully behaved, and so gentle with the children. Hand drawn pictures of Woody were always prominent on thank you cards from the kids.

"On a daily basis he would usually be found sitting in the Coomara house windows, watching clients go by.

"Rest in peace Woody."
