Laidlaw Auctioneers and Valuers has announced its March sale.

This month's auction boasts a rich array of items including fine silver, vintage wristwatches and an extremely rare pair of binoculars.

Among other notable items in the furniture section is a pair of George III Irish brass mounted mahogany plate buckets, typically used by serving staff in country houses while carrying plates to the dinner table.

These furnishings, which are rarely found on the market, are expected to fetch between £1,500 and £2,000.

News and Star: Rolexes and valuable crucifix also included

The current auction also caters to the flourishing watch market with products ranging from antique gold pocket watches to modern Rolex sports timepieces.

Particularly noticeable is a batch of electronic watches made in the 1970s, which were initially disregarded by serious collectors.

Encouragingly, vintage electronic watches are now garnering interest as they embody a significant stage in the evolution of wristwatches.

Some examples, particularly the Omega Megahertz chronometers, are on offer at the auction.

They are expected to sell for between £200 to £400.

This is a notable bargain, especially when compared to the modern Rolex Yachtmaster, which is pegged at an estimated price of £6,000 to £8,000.

News and Star: The rare binoculars headline an exciting March sale

The cameras, science and technology sale section includes a unique early 20th-century German military prismatic binocular periscope made by Carl Zeiss of Jena.

The device has a fascinating history, having initially been submitted to Scottish instrument makers Barr and Stroud for research and reverse engineering — a clear case of early 20th Century military industrial espionage.

This optical instrument is anticipated to fetch over £1,000.

Among the more unique items in the silver section of the auction is a rare and large solid silver ale jug estimated to sell for between £800 and £1,200.

Moreover, lovers of silver, as well as those of religious faith or members of the clergy, could be drawn towards three lots of finely crafted religious silver items such as portable altar sets and a cased set of altar candlesticks with a crucifix.

The two-day sale will take place on March 22 and 23, with a viewing day on March 21.

Laidlaw Auctioneers and Valuers warmly welcome all interested parties to attend.
