THIS week people across the globe will celebrate their love for the world's most famous doll - Barbie.

On March 9 people can celebrate the anniversary of the 11 inch doll making its debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York in 1959.

Designed by Ruth Handler, the co-founder of Mattel Inc., Barbie was created to allow girls to imagine what their lives could be like in the future.

She’s had a slew of careers, from a registered nurse to an astronaut.

After two years of existence Barbie's partner Ken was created in 1961 due to overwhelming demand.

Over the years Barbie has soared in popularity with Mattel selling over one billion dolls worldwide, making it their most popular toy.

Mattel has also created an incredibly popular Barbie merchandise range which includes accessories, clothes, friends, and relatives of Barbie.

Last year, interest surged in the iconic doll as a live action film, starring Hollywood superstars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, was released.

It seems that after 65 years of fun Barbie is showing no signs of stopping and is still a firm favourite for children everywhere.

Here in Cumbria children's love for Barbie is unmatched as these photos show.

We can see people dressed as Barbie at Abbeytown Carnival, a young girl with her Barbie doll at a Parton fun day, and a workshop at Razzamataz in Carlisle.
