A Cumberland Council enforcement officer has won a prestigious award from leading environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy.

Gary Banks was given the Excellence in Enforcement Award at the charity’s annual Network Conference and Awards, held in York on February 29.

His dedication and passion for changing attitudes towards waste crime, empowering local communities, and providing a friendly face throughout the streets of Cumberland made him a standout nominee.

Cumberland Councillor Denise Rollo, executive member for sustainable, resilient and connected places, expressed her delight over Banks' achievement.

She said: "What wonderful news for Gary and the entire team!

"Their dedication and hard work in preserving the beauty of Cumberland are truly commendable.

"This achievement is a testament to Gary's dedication and work ethic, and we couldn't be prouder."

The event draws upon influential decision-makers from local authorities, championing ground breaking environmental initiatives.

Each year, approximately one hundred entries vie for the coveted awards spread across several categories.

Only three local authorities are shortlisted for each award.

Keep Britain Tidy's award and conference make a substantial impact.

This year's conference focused on transitioning public focus from recycling to waste reduction and reuse, and expanding the conversation to include the future of national waste policy.

Keep Britain Tidy chief executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, said: "Our Network Awards celebrate the most innovative campaigns and solutions developed by local authorities to tackle issues like litter, fly-tipping and dog fouling, often with the communities they serve.

"Our hope is that these fantastic initiatives will inspire others across the country to do the same."

The charity pioneered environmental consciousness through large-scale projects such as the Great British Spring Clean and Love Parks Week, setting the management standard for parks and beaches, and inspiring a reduced waste, litter-free and more sustainable lifestyle.

The charity also has initiatives including Eco Schools, Buy Nothing New Month and the Green Flag Award for parks and green spaces. There is also the Blue Flag/Seaside Awards for beaches. Both the Green and Blue Flags celebrate areas of high quality.
