Carlisle boxer becomes national champion - for third time

The 19-year-old put in a commanding performance to see off the competition in Yorkshire.

Haughan was up against Gloucester-based David Angebode in the Class D under-75kg final of the National Association of Boys and Girls Clubs (NABGC) boxing championships.

And the young Cumbrian won the title in Bridlington after a unanimous judges’ decision.

Haughan went into the bout after defeating champions from Merseyside, Cheshire, Yorkshire and the Midlands.

He faced Angebode who had overcome London and Welsh champions en route to the final.

Haughan developed a clear lead in the first round after being forced onto the back foot but landing his long jab from range as Angebode came forward.

A backhand from the Carlisle boxer then stopped Angebode in his tracks, followed by another backhand and a lead hand hook to the head, whilst Haughan’s superior reach kept him out of trouble.

Angebode came out for the second round throwing non-stop punches to force Haughan onto the ropes, but the Cumbrian countered well with heavy uppercuts and hooks on the target area.

A straight backhand from Haughan led the referee to issue a mandatory eight count. Angebode fought on and, after landing a right hand/left hook combination early in the third round, Haughan countered with a sharp lead hand hook.

The Gloucester boxer had Haughan against the ropes but the Carlisle boxer always looked to counter well, as the boxers traded punches to the bell.

“A cracking display of boxing from both boxers but it was Marc who had his hand raised as all five judges were in agreement winning by unanimous decision,” added Carlisle Villa.
