It has been confirmed that people can now extend the festive season with a trip to Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway to experience the wonder of winter in the spectacular Western Lake District between Boxing Day and New Year’s Day 2024.

With the longer nights drawing in, thoughts are turning to the festive season and special ‘winter warmer’ trains are a great way to take in one of the most scenic narrow gauge railway routes in the UK.
Along the seven-mile journey, passengers can enjoy panoramic views of the Cumbrian coast and dramatic mountain scenery between the Lake District National Park’s only coastal village in Ravenglass – also part of two World Heritage Sites – and Dalegarth in the stunning Eskdale Valley.
As part of the continuing festivities, everyone boarding one of the festive trains with a full-line return ticket during this period (December 26 to January 1) can warm up with a complimentary cup of non-alcoholic festive fruit punch and a mince pie.
To add a little sparkle, visitors will see the engines dressed in their festive outfits.
All of the stations will be adorned with Christmas decorations and offer great vantage points for the best photo opportunities at the turntables and passing loops.
The railway’s cafes, gift shops and the Ravenglass Railway museum will also be open while trains are running.
Walks from Ravenglass station range from a five-minute stroll to the beach offering views of the estuary, to a 5km walk to the Roman Bath House and Muncaster Castle.
At the other end, passengers can stroll into Boot Village from Dalegarth, with another short walking loop along Annes Walk via St Catherine’s Church.
It is recommended walkers take an OS map, as well as checking weather forecast conditions and train times beforehand.
