Carlisle boxer Ike Ogbo will bring a bronze medal back from his latest outing for Great Britain.

The former Border City Amateur Boxing club star has been in action in Poland.

Ogbo made his way to the Leszek Tournament super-heavyweight semi-finals after defeating home fighter Oskar Safaryan.

But injury meant the former Cumberland Infirmary doctor had to shelve his bid to reach the final and go for gold in Kielce.

"Due to an injury sustained in his opening bout, Ike has withdrawn from the remainder of the competition, meaning he will leave Poland with a bronze medal," said GB Boxing.

It is a second medal in Great Britain colours for the boxer, who also took bronze on his GB debut in February.

That came in the Bocskai Tournament in Hungary.

Ogbo was philosophical about the outcome in Poland this week, writing on Instagram: "Unfortunately had to withdraw from the rest of the tournament due to a bit of bad luck with an injury (I'm fine, just a precaution).

"Mark my words, I'll be back better than ever. Reloading..."

Dr Ogbo rose to prominence whilst on Border City ABC's books, when he won the national amateur super-heavyweight championship in December 2020.

That earned him the chance to impress Great Britain coaches, with Ogbo going on to win a place on the GB emerging talent programme.

Ogbo, who worked as an accident and emergency doctor at the Cumberland Infirmary during his time in Carlisle, has since relocated to Birmingham but often speaks of his debt of gratitude to the Carlisle club.

Border City have also regularly spoken of their pride at the boxer's progress in the sport.
