A cricket club will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this year with a special dinner event.

Lanercost Cricket Club was formed 75 years ago this year and, on November 26, people are invited to join in the celebrations and listen to the guest speaker that is planned to attend.

English cricket legend Steve Harmison, a former player for England and the current Durham opening bowler, and who was a part of the England team when they won the Ashes, will be the guest speaker for the event.

The Mayor of Carlisle, Mike Mitchelson, who has for his life lived in and around the Brampton and Lanercost area, is a strong supporter of the club, as well as the chair.

He explained the history of the club, from starting in humble beginnings 75 years ago initially playing friendlies.

It initially consisted of just one team playing in the Carlisle and District League, he said, but over the years it has progressed to the current status of the club which plays in the Eden Valley Cricket League, with nine teams in total.

Mr Mitchelson said the club’s members include players in Division One and the ECB Premier League.

There are also teams for youngsters, from those aged under 11 and other teams catering for older children and teens, and there is also a women and girls team, he added.

On the achievement of still standing after all these years, Mr Mitchelson said: “It is a fantastic achievement that the club in its current form is thriving 75 years on from when it was started by my father.

“It's gone from one team to nine teams, providing cricket opportunities for adults, and young people of all ages and genders.

“The club this year won the league for the second year running.

“One of the most pleasing things about the First 11 team is that all the players have come through our youth system.

“We are very proud of our pathway to cricket where we start from young children, with a pathway through to senior cricket, this results in us winning the league.”

Tickets for the event are available by either emailing the club at lanercostsc@gmail.com or from Brampton Post Office.
