14 lakes in just 48 hours

A MOTHER of two disabled twin boys started a mammoth fundraising challenge today which will see her kayak around 14 lakes in 48 hours.

Dawn Raynor is raising money for a £1m respite centre in west Cumbria. Her 14-year-old sons Callan and Ethan, have tuberous sclerosis which means they have uncontrolled epilepsy – suffering many seizures every day.

Dawn says the nearest respite facilities to their home in Moor Row are 20 miles away and only open three days a week.

With no previous experience, Mrs Raynor will kayak 13 major lakes, meres and waters. Alongside her will be kayaker Martin Whitmill, who kayaks with his dog.

She’s fundraising for the charity, Give us a Break, which Dawn formed along with Gillian Linklater, Lisa Egan and Kelly Agnew. So far they have raised £15,000 and they ultimately hope to raise £1m to build the centre.

Dawn said she is passionate about the challenge as she is tired of children having nowhere to go.

“My kids have been prisoners in their own home. I can’t let them be free and this is why we are doing this, to help other disabled kids,” she added.

“This won’t help my children because they will be grown up by the time this is hopefully up and running, I am doing this to stop the fight for other parents, to give them somewhere they can take their children and relax.”

Dawn started her challenge at 9am this morning at Loweswater. She was due to tackle Crummock, Buttermere and Derwent Water through the day and Bassenthwaite at 11.30pm tonight. She starts tomorrow at 3.30am on Thirlmere before kayaking across Grasmere, Rydal, Ullswater and Windermere. Monday sees her starting at Coniston at 7am followed by Wastwater and finishing at Ennerdale at 5pm.
