Victoria Viaduct will remain closed this weekend as work continues to make safe the derelict Central Plaza Hotel.

Contractors have now removed 100 tonnes of masonry from the building and work is well underway on the right-hand side gable end.

A spokeswoman for Carlisle City Council said: "Following the completion of works on the left-hand side gable end of the building, work is well underway on the right-hand side gable end.

"More than 100 tonnes of masonry has now been removed from the building so far."

The next stage involves removing the mansard roof from the front section of the building.

The spokeswoman added: "Additional improvement works will then be carried out to the existing scaffold and hoarding will be removed from the front of adjacent buildings."

"Bush Brow reopened at 4pm on Monday and every effort is being made to ensure that the remaining works are completed as quickly as possible."

But it is not yet known when the road will fully reopen.

The hotel building has no owner but the city council is duty bound to ensure that the property does not cause an immediate danger to people in and around the building.
