Steven Rigg can help add "scruffy goals" to Carlisle United's repertoire, reckons manager Keith Curle.

The Cumbrian forward was back in the Blues squad at Colchester after rejoining on a short-term deal.

While Rigg was an unused substitute in Essex, Curle feels the ex-Penrith man can offer something different to United's attacking options.

"Sometimes a player can be right under your nose," said Curle of Rigg, who had been training with Carlisle to improve his fitness after a long-term knee injury.

"You look at his key attributes, and the lad will score goals.

"You won't be able to fill a CD with his goals outside the box, but put the ball in and around the box and he will get scruffy goals.

"He is brave, aggressive and knows where the goal is.

"Last week [against Exeter] we put the ball in the box with good frequency and didn't have anybody having those final touches.

"We've got some good centre-forwards but sometimes we don't have somebody to get that scruffy goal, someone to slide in where it hurts and get rewards - that's Riggy to a T."

Curle hailed United's disciplined performance in their victory at Colchester - the first time in eight visits that Carlisle have won at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Jack Bonham produced a superb double save before sub Jamie Devitt's winner.

"We earned the right to play," the manager said.

"We had nullified them by half-time and then thought we could use that man [Jamie Devitt] in midfield.

"We gained confidence in possession, had that forward-thinking mentality and that's because of the work we have done through the week.

"Clean sheets win you games and our shape, discipline, desire and aggression were all in place."

United are ball number 10 in tonight's FA Cup first round draw which is live on BBC2 and BT Sport from 7pm.

Carlisle's youth team slipped to a 4-1 defeat at Wigan, with Keighran Kerr's penalty a consolation for Darren Edmondson's under-18 side.
