Keith Curle says Carlisle United's irresistible form is a result of him removing the fear factor from his Brunton Park squad.

Curle believes there was an acceptance of defeat - and an eagerness to blame "bad luck" - when he first took charge.

But now the Cumbrians are embarking on one of the best unbeaten runs in their history.

They have already smashed the record for United's longest ever unbeaten start to the season, with further feats also in reach.

And the manager reckons instilling a fearless attitude has helped transform their fortunes.

"There's no fear amongst the group," Curle said.

"Players don't go out in a protected mentality and with a fear of losing games.

"We go out to perform, knowing what our roles and responsibilities are, individually and a group.

"That’s what we work on - and taking fear or the "unlucky" factor out of the club, out of the group, is massively important."

Curle also believes the way he has been able to create a working environment that does not allow outside distractions is another reason for United's formidable form.

They are the only unbeaten side in the EFL and will bid to extend their run to 15 games with the visit of Crawley this weekend.

Curle said: "We are a hard-working group who are enjoying our environment.

"I wouldn't say it's invitation only - but we don’t have distractions.

"It’s a work in progress that means we're able to concentrate and focus on the next game.

"And that's the most important thing now - not the 14 that have already gone, but next Saturday's game, because there's three points available."

United midfielder Russell Penn has extended his loan spell with National League side Gateshead by a further two months.

Penn will remain with the north east outfit until Boxing Day.

The Blues have a standard recall clause in the 30-year-old's deal that would enable them to recall Penn with 24 hours' notice.

Penn has made five outings for Heed and links up with them again ahead of their trip to Guiseley tonight.

One of Curle's United predecessors is back in football, meanwhile - in the Premier League.

Neil McDonald, Blues manager in 2006/7, has been appointed assistant boss to Mike Phelan at struggling Hull City.

McDonald's last role was as manager of Blackpool before he was axed in May.

"Neil brings a wealth of experience," said Phelan.
