Popular striker Jabo Ibehre has quit Carlisle United and is set to join one of their League Two rivals.

The big frontman was this week offered a new deal by manager Keith Curle, who wanted the Londoner to spend a third season at Brunton Park.

But Ibehre today confirmed that he had rejected the offer.

The 34-year-old is now expected to seal a move to a southern-based club in Carlisle's division - with sources saying Cambridge is his likely destination.

Ibehre's decision, which the Islington man said he has made for family reasons, came just three days after Curle tabled what he described as a "very competitive" deal to remain at United.

Carlisle's manager also hoped the 34-year-old's affinity with the Blues and their fans would tempt him to prolong his stay in Cumbria.

His departure will be an early blow to Curle as he rebuilds his squad for the 2017/18 season.

The striker scored 31 goals in his two seasons with United and ended last season in fine form, scoring in five consecutive games to help keep the Cumbrians' play-off hopes alive.

It leaves Curle with a further gap to fill in attack, with loanees Jamie Proctor and George Waring having returned to parent clubs, and Ben Tomlinson released. A decision on Junior Joachim's future has been deferred because he has been in France on family business.

Ibehre, dubbed "the Islington Assassin" by Blues fans, today posted a message on Twitter confirming his departure and thanking Carlisle and their supporters.

He wrote: "Just wanna say a big thank-you to everyone at Carlisle United for a fantastic two years.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. The love and support has been overwhelming at times and the memories will live long.

"I've appreciated your smiles, your kind words and warm enthusiasm for the team and myself to succeed.

"Big thanks to the manager and Lee Dykes for giving me the opportunity to come here and play. I wish the team and the fans the best of luck and promotion next season.

"My new journey takes me home and a new challenge awaits. The Islington assassin lays down his weapons and signs out."

Ibehre also told Carlisle's website that he wanted to be closer to his family in London.

He also referred to his baby daughter Finley's diagnosis with meningitis in early 2016, from which she has since recovered.

"The main reason for the decision I’ve made is that I have to think about my family and loved ones down in London," he said. "Everyone knows what we went through with the little one last year and sometimes you have to balance your work life with the needs of those close to you.

“That side of things counts for a lot with me and, as I say, it’s effectively why I’ve made this decision."

The other first-team players Curle confirmed he wants to keep - Mark Gillespie, Jason Kennedy, Michael Raynes, James Bailey and Samir Nabi - have until next Tuesday to officially acknowledge the offers.

Curle has been meeting transfer targets this week.
