Carlisle United have secured a loan extension that will keep goalkeeper Jack Bonham at Brunton Park until the end of the season.

The Brentford gloveman's half-season deal was due to expire at the turn of the year.

But the Blues have now secured the 24-year-old's services for the full campaign.

Bonham has been first-choice for most of the season so far, making 23 appearances.

He recently said he was keen to remain with United into 2018.

Manager Keith Curle said on Carlisle's website: “We still think there's more to come from Jack. He came here to get game time and he's enjoyed fighting for and having the number one shirt.

"We know where we think he can improve and we're looking forward to watching him develop even more under the guidance of [goalkeeping coach] Dan Watson.

"He has the attributes to have a very good career and we like working with him. It's good for us, his club and for him that he can now get his teeth into the second half of the campaign within our first team environment."

Bonham would also be able to play for United in the League Two play-offs if Curle's 14th-placed side can reach the top seven in the second half of the campaign.

Bonham's fellow loan keeper, Shamal George, returned to Liverpool this week after suffering an ankle injury which has cut short his half-season deal.

Teenage keeper Morgan Bacon is set to step up to the bench at Forest Green on Saturday, having been ineligible for Tuesday's cup clash against Gillingham because he had not been registered by United for the original tie.

Curle would also like to keep right-back James Brown for the season but United's hopes of a deal will depend on whether his parent club Millwall choose to follow up interest in the 19-year-old from League One.

Former Blues keeper and current academy goalkeeping coach Tony Elliott will be in the city's Waterstones store on Saturday from 10.30am signing copies of his book, 'A Modern Approach to Goalkeeping.'
