Brave Carlisle United suffered a dramatic 14-13 penalty shoot-out defeat at Derby in the EFL Cup second round.

The Blues were finally beaten in an epic contest as Joe McKee's spot-kick was saved and Timi Elsnik won it for the Championship side.

That ended a marathon encounter which saw Darren Bent put Derby ahead in normal time before Mike Jones made it 1-1 deep into injury-time.

Carlisle had chances to win in extra-time, while Nigel Pearson's side also blew opportunities in the endless clash at the iPro Stadium.

United impressed with their passing game in the first half and thought they should have had a penalty when Danny Grainger's header seemed to strike the arm of Rams' ex-Blues defender Richard Keogh.

Mark Ellis, recalled along with Jamie Devitt and Shaun Miller, then tested west Cumbrian keeper Scott Carson as United performed well.

Nick Blackman and Abdoul Camara missed with half-chances for the hosts, the latter going close early after the break.

But United kept playing with good heart and Devitt could have scored when attacking a Grainger cross on 54 minutes.

After Curle withdrew the dangerous Nicky Adams, Derby scored when Bent pounced after Gillespie touched a Blackman shot against the post.

United's boss, who started with five at the back, then brought on Jabo Ibehre and Charlie Wyke as Carlisle sought a route back.

Derby sub Tom Ince failed to clinch it for the hosts, and then United levelled in dramatic style as Jones fired past Carson from the edge of the box.

In extra-time Bradley Johnson cleared a Tom Miller header off the line, with Elsnik among those going close for Derby.

The penalty shoot-out then went on so long that some players had to go twice.

Wyke had his first effort saved as Gillespie responded to keep out Will Hughes.

After Ibehre then also missed, Alex Pearce fired over the bar when a goal would have won it at 6-6.

Finally, Carson guessed correctly to thwart sub McKee, who had come off the bench for his debut, and sub Elsnik at last ended the contest.
