Carlisle Utd 2 Mansfield Town 3: Carlisle United were knocked out of the controversial Checkatrade Trophy as Mansfield edged a five-goal encounter in front of just 1,126 fans at Brunton Park.

The fourth-lowest attendance in the stadium's history saw sub Danny Rose hit a late winner for the Stags after Carlisle had fought back from 2-0 down.

Krystian Pearce and Matt Green had put the visitors in command at the break.

But Shaun Miller and sub Charlie Wyke brought Carlisle level with 10 minutes to go.

Rose, though, fired past Max Crocombe after an 85th-minute counter-attack to put Steve Evans' side into the last 16.

It meant Carlisle missed out on £20,000 prize money, as they lost back-to-back games for the first time since February 2015.

Mansfield defender Pearce opened the scoring when he met a Chris Clements free-kick and sent his finish looping over Blues keeper Crocombe in the 14th minute.

And they made it two on the half-hour when Lee Collins was found in space in the United box, and Green arrived to finish his cross at close range.

Earlier, Alex McQueen had gone close to a goal on his first outing since rejoining the Blues.

But Stags keeper Shearer saved after McQueen had been played in by Shaun Miller.

Jamie Devitt and Miller also went close in the opening stages, while Reggie Lambe charged down a Shearer clearance and saw the ball rebound wide.

But Mansfield could have added more, with Collins shooting wide.

Kevin Wright, who joined United along with McQueen, came off the bench in first-half injury time to replace Joe McKee, who went off injured.

The Blues boss made a further change at the break, bringing on Wyke in place of McQueen and reverting to 4-4-2.

Eventually the Cumbrians rallied, with Miller heading home a Danny Grainger cross in the 73rd minute.

Wyke then levelled things in the 80th minute, spinning to fire home after new boy Wright had beaten the keeper to the ball in the box.

But Rose then stole the victory for the Stags by sending a superb finish into the top corner.

Carlisle started the game with three at the back, with McQueen and Grainger on right and left midfield respectively, in front of another low crowd in a competition many fans across the country are boycotting over the involvement of Premier League and Championship Under-21 teams.

McQueen's start was among six changes to the team, with Crocombe, Macaulay Gillesphey, Devitt, Joe McKee and Miller recalled.

Making way from Saturday's team against Rochdale were Mark Gillespie, Jason Kennedy, Wyke, Nicky Adams, Michael Raynes and Mike Jones.

Neither Raynes nor Jones were in the squad, while there was no place in the 18 this time for youth team players Cameron Salkeld and Jordan Holt, who featured against Fleetwood in the first round.
