Keith Curle insists veteran Derek Asamoah isn't at Carlisle United simply to make up the numbers in the Blues' promotion push.

The Blues manager says the striker, who has extended his short-term deal at Brunton Park, is "desperate" to force his way into the side over the festive period.

Asamoah has so far made eight appearances including just one start since he rejoined the club in October.

Curle, though, handed the 35-year-old a further month's deal as the Ghanaian competes with Shaun Miller, Jabo Ibehre and 14-goal top scorer Charlie Wyke for a place up front.

United's boss suggested Asamoah's latest deal was to ensure United have enough depth until the transfer window opens - but he also says the striker can make his mark.

Asked why his latest deal was for one month after his initial contract was for two, Curle said: "Basically to get us to January.

"But Derek is desperate to be playing football.

"People might think he's happy just to be picking up a wage and sitting on the bench. He's not - he's desperate to be playing.

"He's training exceptionally well. He wants that opportunity and I know that, as and when needed, he's ready."

Ibehre's return against Yeovil last weekend came as a welcome boost for the manager at a time when he has other injury concerns.

The big frontman featured as a second-half sub and will look at build on that outing when second-placed United go to Crewe on Boxing Day.

Curle has made no secret that he is interested in other frontmen in January, with Cardiff's Rhys Healey one possible target.

But it is in other positions where the manager may have to keep juggling his options, with it still unclear when Danny Grainger and Mike Jones will return from injury.

Midfielder Joe McKee also remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.
