John Sheridan has told Jason Kennedy to remain positive as the midfielder continues on the long road back to fitness at Carlisle United.

Kennedy is not expected to be fit until the new year as he battles his way back from a pelvis operation.

But the experienced player has returned to the training ground as he continues exercises and strengthening work under the eye of new boss Sheridan.

The manager admits it will be like having a new signing once the popular 31-year-old eventually returns to action.

"I'm gutted he's not fit and available now because he's an excellent player, especially for this level – he's played against my teams before," Sheridan said.

"I had a quick chat with him when I first met him. He's had a difficult time with his injury but I've told him I've been there myself with my knee.

"When you're out a long time and you're watching the lads playing, training, laughing and joking [it can be hard], but the good thing is he's in and around them now.

"He's got four or five months – January time is what people are expecting [for him to return]. That's four or five months, but I've told him he's probably got four or five years left in his career, and to get himself back as best he can.

"If he does that, and comes back in January, it will be like a new player for us."

Kennedy has not figured in the first team since Carlisle's 3-3 draw against Wycombe last October.

"He's a great kid and I'm hoping he just concentrates on getting himself ready," Sheridan added.

"I've told him not to rush back. Hopefully he'll come back as fit as he can."
