Carlisle United 3 Morecambe 2: Carlisle United began their Checkatrade Trophy campaign with a 3-2 win over Morecambe.

Having trailed twice in the first half before George Glendon, and then Macaulay Gillesphey, equalised, Jerry Yates scored the decisive fifth goal on 75 minutes.

On the pitch, in front of the crowd of 1,213 at Brunton Park, the seventh lowest at Brunton Park, United had the first chance on three minutes as Richie Bennett volleyed a Gillesphey cross narrowly over.

But the visitors broke the deadlock on the sixth minute when Vadaine Oliver headed into the empty net after Kevin Ellison's first shot had been blocked by centre-back Tom Parkes.

Glendon equalised for the Blues with his first goal of his career, striking home from 25 yards in the 13th minute.

The Shrimps re-took the lead on 24 minutes after Oliver cut back for Joe Piggott to sweep home after a lovely move.

Carlisle levelled for the second time, though, with Gillesphey driving past Morecambe's sub keeper Barry Roche in the 38th minute.

Seven minutes after the restart, Gillesphey nearly bagged his second of the night, heading a Devitt corner against Roche.

Then, just before the hour mark, Devitt fired over for Carlisle as both sides searched for the fifth goal of the encounter.

In the 74th minute, Carlos Mendes Gomes forced a save from United stopper Adam Collin as the game edged towards a penalty shoot-out.

But, a minute later, Carlisle took the lead for the first time when Rotherham loanee Yates found the bottom corner.

United boss John Sheridan made three changes for his side's Checkatrade Trophy clash against Morecambe.

Gary Miller, Regan Slater and Ashley Nadesan came into the side, replacing Anthony Gerrard, Kelvin Etuhu and Hallam Hope who is away on international duty with Barbados.

Devitt faced his old club while Adam Campbell couldn't play against his parent club and Jack Sowerby doesn’t have permission to play from Fleetwood in the competition.

Meanwhile, youth player Liam McCarron was on the bench.

The likes of Ellison, Piggott and keeper Mark Halstead were in the Morecambe team.
