Symington strike was best goal ever scored, says Carlisle Utd boss

Carlisle United hero Dave Symington admitted he was in dreamland after Blues boss Greg Abbott described the Workington teenager’s incredible equaliser as the best goal ever scored.
Symington scored with a stunning 35-yard free-kick with his first touch of the ball, two minutes after coming on as substitute, with Carlisle trailing 1-0 at home to Scunthorpe United.
Abbott described the 18-year-old winger’s strike as the best goal he has ever seen and believes if it had been scored in the Premier League it would be the goal of the season.
Symington was told he was in charge of set-pieces as he took to the pitch and admitted hours of work on the training ground had paid off.
“I amazed myself how sweetly I caught the ball,” he said.
“The gaffer told me before I went on I was in charge of set-pieces and he said just hit the target if you are anywhere in range. I just put the ball down and this was my first touch of the ball and I thought I had a chance. Amazingly, it went into the top corner.
“You know yourself when you’ve caught it sweetly and I had that feeling when it was travelling through the air.
“I practise day-in, day-out in training and I would like to think I’m getting good at it now.
“I’ve always been able to take free-kicks and I’ve grown up with that technique.”
Symington was handed a professional deal last May and only broke into the first-team this season.
He has scored five goals and along with fellow teenager Brad Potts, has already attracted interest from bigger clubs, with Wolves boss Dean Saunders the latest top manager to check out Carlisle’s youngsters.
“This season has been amazing and I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” said Symington.
“I’m just trying to do the best I can and hopefully the gaffer knows what I’m capable of and I’ll get my chance.
“I’ve had a few downs but after that goal I’m on an absolute high.
“Being a professional footballer is every young lad’s dream and playing for Carlisle United is an amazing feeling.
“Being a Cumbrian, I think I have a bond with the crowd. It’s just great.”
Abbott was full of praise for the highly-rated youngster, who pushed his claims for a return to the starting line-up when the Blues face League One leaders Tranmere on Saturday.
“His deliveries are great and dead balls are David’s great strength. To be fair to the kid, he practises and wants to get better and make an impact.
“He is still learning his game and that part of the game is practice. You’ve just seen the best goal ever scored at Brunton Park and it is certainly the best goal I have ever seen anywhere I’ve ever been.”

Have your say
Craig goldsmiths cracker. won match of the day goal of the month against manchester city must be one of the best .
The best thing about the goal is not the power , the distance or the fact it went it the top corner. It is the technique he uses. If you watch carefully he uses the front of his boot above his toes, normally when you kick a ball especially for freekicks you use the inside of you boot. To do what he did is very very hard. Ronaldo hits his free kicks like that and very few others have that skill. He is an increadible tallent, i agree with Greg not rushing him and giving him a chance to learn at his pace, he is only 18, however it must now be time to let him loose a bit more often from the start of games! Not sure we will have him next season, think he might be gracing the Premier league next season!
