Carlisle Utd eye Scunthorpe striker Garry Thompson

Carlisle United are showing interest in axed Scunthorpe striker Garry Thompson, News & Star Sport has learned.

The Kendal-born forward, who has just been freed by the Iron, is attracting attention from Brunton Park. Thompson, 31, was a surprise departure at the end of the season as Glanford Park boss Alan Knill conducted a 10-man cull.

And it’s understood Blues boss Greg Abbott has made it known that he is an admirer of the ex-Morecambe man, who had been with Scunthorpe for four years. The pacy Thompson may appeal to Abbott because of his versatility, as he is capable of playing on the right as well as the middle of the attack.

He has scored 20 goals in 130 appearances for Scunthorpe, including seven last season. He was released despite scoring in their final two games of the campaign.

Thompson featured 13 times in the Championship in 2010/11 but his time at the North Lincolnshire club has sometimes been hindered by injury.

Manager Knill, revealing why Thompson’s contract had not been renewed, said the frontman had informed him that he was looking for a new challenge.

The Iron boss, explaining his decision to free 10 players, said: “Some decisions were easier because the players made it easy for me by saying they didn’t want to stay. Others though were much more difficult.

“Togs [Sam Togwell] had made up his mind he wants to try to move back down south, Micky [O’Connor] more-or-less wants to move on and Thommo [Thompson] said exactly the same, that maybe a fresh challenge would benefit him.”

The interest in Thompson comes as Abbott looks at his options in attack, with key frontman Francois Zoko yet to make a decision on his future.

The Ivorian is among eight players who have been offered new deals by Carlisle, who are expecting answers by the end of the month.

United have added a trip to Workington Reds to their pre-season calendar.

The Blues will head for Borough Park on Tuesday July 17. Carlisle already have games against Kendal and Barrow confirmed.

You cannot judge a persons strike record with another team. Don't forget Scunthorpe were struggling after being relegated from the Championship the previous season.
Carlisle succeed on team work and perhaps this striker is a perfect addition to this squad.
Time will only tell and we know he's on a free release and his wages won't be massive coming to Carlisle. Also, Greg won't sign any striker on a long contract, until he's proven himself.
I'm a doubter too, but trust Greg to sign what he believes could be an asset to the team. Let's give him a chance. This is only one possible player being looked at.
