Carlisle United could face Premier League opposition in their build-up to the 2016/17 season.

Manager Keith Curle says the Blues have been in discussions with two top-flight clubs as they try to finalise their pre-season plans.

Both Sunderland and newly-promoted Middlesbrough have been in touch with Carlisle about the prospect of summer friendlies.

United have yet to confirm details of any of their pre-season games, but Curle said they are working on a programme that will help the team get in perfect shape for the new League Two season.

"We've got Sunderland pencilled in, and Middlesbrough have been on the phone requesting the suitability of a game," the Carlisle manager said.

"We have also been talking to Barrow, and there are some other local games to fix up, to make sure we get some game time and showcase our continued relationship with the community.

"We will want to be able to showcase our new signings as close to Carlisle United and Brunton Park as we can.

"Within that, we still need competitive fixtures. Pre-season last year went very well, with our games against Preston, Bradford and Oldham - they set us up nicely for the start of the season.

"We are looking for that same competitive edge."

United would hope encounters with Sam Allardyce's Sunderland and Aitor Karanka's Boro would be money-spinners for the club if they are held at Brunton Park.

They would bring the prospect of good away followings as both north-east clubs prepare for their top-flight campaign.

Both clubs have played friendlies at Carlisle's ground in recent years.

United are looking at alternatives if they are unable to secure either of the north-east outfits.

But before confirming any home friendlies this summer, Curle said the Blues first need to establish exactly when Brunton Park will be ready for action.

He said the impact of next month's Rod Stewart concert on the surface will play a part in United's schedule.

The legendary rocker is set to play at United's ground on Tuesday, June 21, shortly before the players return for pre-season training.

Curle added: "Things are not set in stone as yet and we are still finalising things with [groundsman] David Mitchell.

"As good as Dave is at his job he cant tell me exactly when that grass is going to be ready to be played on, and we don't know the aftermath of what's going to happen with the Rod Stewart concert.

"It will be down to the weather at that time, how quickly they are able to pack up afterwards, and how quickly we need to set up the pitch after that."
