A SHOPLIFTER who stole booze from a convenience store told magistrates, ‘stupid things happen when I’m intoxicated’.

Joshua Rudd, 29, entered Coleridge Stores in Egremont on January 28 and stole a bottle of fortified wine, Workington Magistrates’ Court heard.

Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said Rudd concealed the bottle of MD 20/20 on his person and then walked towards the entrance to the store.

He asked a male if he had a pound and then left the store, making no attempt to pay.

Rudd, of Birks Road, Cleator Moor, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop.

The defendant, who was not legally represented, said: “Theft is not even a thing for me. I’m sorry. I did do it. I’m accepting what I did.

“It’s totally out of character. When I’m intoxicated, stupid things happen.”

Rudd was fined £80 and ordered to pay £10.49 in compensation to Coleridge Stores.

He must also pay £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
