A COASTGUARD team were called out following reports of 'light' off Whitehaven harbour, which were though to be a person in the water.

The team were paged late Wednesday evening, May 1 to reports of lights believed to be a person having entered the sea off West Pier.

In a statement on social media, Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team, said: "After quickly arriving on scene, a search was conducted in the area with nothing found. Members of the Public enjoying some night fishing informed us that some of their lights had blown from the harbour into the sea, but had since been recovered.

"We consider this call to be a FAWGI (False Alarm With Good Intent). With time being so critical with person in the water shouts, we would like to thank to the First Informant for not hesitating when they believed someone was in distress.

"We were joined by colleagues from Maryport Coastguard Rescue Team and would like to thank St Bees RNLI for quickly making it round from St. Bees to lend their support."
