Workington Town handed Bradford Bulls their first League 1 defeat of the season in a superb display at Derwent Park.

A late drop-goal from the boot of Jordan Tansey sealed the 17-16 victory with just over a minute remaining.

The Bulls had been leading for the majority of the second half but Town always looked dangerous in a totally committed display.

Once again Jamie Doran was to the fore, along with a great pack effort as Town laid a marker down.

The experienced front row of Oliver Wilkes, Sean Penkywicz and Ryan Bailey were on fire and Caine Barnes also stood out in an all-over great performance.

When Elliot Miller executed a great angled run to touch down with five minutes remaining and Tansey goalled, it was game on with five minutes remaining.

It was a tough start from both sides with no quarter given and the opening minutes saw Bradford with two sets of six Near the Town line.

It needed a good run from Joe Hambley to bring the ball away and defuse the pressure.

The home side then put themselves under unnecessary pressure when Jordan Tansey missed a high kick and Carl Forber had to push it dead for a drop-out.

Both sides had chances to break the deadlock with good runs from Elliot Miller, and Ryan Bailey but then Scott Akehurst went without the ball when he looked certain to score.

In the end it was Bradford who took the first points when Joe Keys kicked over a penalty and then Town levelled with Jordan Tansey also slotting one over.

Town suddenly upped a gear and began running hard at the Bradford line and it paid off.

They went into the lead on the 20-minute mark as Jamie Doran put up a high bomb and the Bradford defenders clashed as they went for it.

The ball was spilled and Caine Barnes was quick to react and raced over the line, leaving Tansey to add the conversion.

This buoyed the home team further and a great little angled run from Forber saw him halted just inches away.

And at the opposite end of the field, George Flanagan thought he had done enough but a scrambling Town defence held him up over the line.

Gordon Maudling was nearly through and surging to the line when he was pulled back by Dane Chisholm and when the half-back tried to slow the play down by holding on, the ref sent him to the sin bin to cool his heels.

Tansey converted the resulting penalty and Town were 10-2 to the good.

But, just as Town widened the advantage, the Bulls reined them back in as the home side were penalised for offside and Keys slotted over the kick.

And with just over a minute to go until half time, it was Ross Peltier who saved the visitors' blushes as he crashed over and Keys converted as the hooter sounded to level matter at 10-10.

The second half opened with Bradford on the attack and a kick to the corner had to be dived on by Patrick, at the expense of a drop-out.

It looked as though Brandon Pickersgill was going to be the man to break the deadlock as he barged through under the posts but the ref pulled it back for a double movement and Town could breathe again.

But moments later they had the advantage as Jake Butler-Fleming found a gap in the defence near the line and crossed, leaving Keys to add the extras.

A great break by Gordon Maudling lifted the Town troops but it ended in disaster for the second rower who injured himself in the process and had to leave the field.

Town tried again, attacking the left hand side but Tansey's kick looking for the winger was too hard and went out of play.

Doran was then clothes lined by Chisholm and for the second time the half-back was the recipient of a yellow card for a high tackle and the Bulls were again down to 12.

The home side looked to use the advantage and Doran put a neat kick in looking for the run of Tansey and Bradford had to clear their line for a drop-out.

But Forber couldn't pick the ball up from the kick and a knock-on relieved the pressure for Bradford.

Keys looked to seal the win with an attempted drop-goal which just shaded the wrong side of the post and Town went back on the attack.

With five minutes left on the clock, Town saw a chink of light and it came from Miller.

A wonderfully angled run from the centre saw him stretch out over the line, leaving Tansey a kick that levelled the scores at 16-16.

Town continued to strike at the heart of the Bradford defence and they got themselves into the centre of the field.

And there was Tansey with a high drop-goal to give his side the advantage.

Bradford, as expected, put in a short kick off, it went the distance and was palmed back but Penkywicz was there to dive on the ball.

And they saw out the remaining minute and as the hooter sounded the crowd erupted for a superb victory.
