WORKINGTON Town are creating their own French Connection, and it’s nothing to do with the football World Cup final tomorrow.

Ilias Bergal, a really quick winger from Leigh Centurions, will be in the Town squad for the derby clash with Whitehaven.

Bergal, 22, scored five tries in six games for Swinton at the end of last season, including a crucial one in the relegation battle with Oldham.

He had joined Swinton on a short-term contract last season and impressed Leigh enough for them to offer him a two-year contract this year.

Bergal scored three tries in three Championship games before being loaned to Swinton but is now available to Town through their dual registration arrangement.

And he was named as a stand-by player for the French squad at last year’s Rugby League World Cup, before being called up prior to the tournament when Hakim Miloudi was dropped for a breach of team discipline.

Town coach Leon Pryce said: “I’m looking forward to seeing him in a Town shirt because I’m told he’s very quick and an exciting player to watch.”

But Town won’t have the services of Sam Wood from Huddersfield Giants who had to come off after three minutes against Hunslet on Sunday with a knee injury.

Pryce said: “He did go back on after half an hour but he’s got the knee in a brace now and is obviously going to be out of action for a little while.

“We will have Tyler Dickinson again from the Giants. Sunday’s outing for him against Hunslet was the first game he’d played for six week so he will enjoy it better this week when he knows the lads a lot better.”

Elliott Miller, Perry Singleton and Jake Moore will all come back into contention after recovering from injury but there’s no Fuifui Moimoi (suspended), Sam Forrester, Gordon Maudling or Scott Akehurst.
