There were runs galore in the Eden Valley Cricket League again this weekend.

The exception in the Premier League was at Edenside. Braithwaite (112/9) struggled to put runs on the board against leaders Carlisle 2s.

Tom Sams (35) did best with the bat against some mean Carlisle bowling – Simon Plevin (3/15) and Ruairidh Barker (2/19).

Carlisle (114/0) made short work of their target with Jordan Oultram (57 not out) and Eddie Mitchell (42 not out) undefeated, taking Carlisle to an emphatic 10-wicket victory.

"Once bitten twice shy" certainly doesn’t apply to Threlkeld.

Last week’s lesson at Carlisle was ignored as, having won the toss yet again, they asked Kirkby Stephen to bat first.

Kirkby Stephen (273/5) took full advantage of a superb batting wicket with Charles Bowman (101) leading the way.

Scoreboard pressure produced some poor shot selection as Threlkeld (135/10) collapsed to 74/9; only a last-wicket stand of 61 with a half-century from Dan Thompson giving the scoreline some respectability; Mark Ousby and Chris Scarr doing the damage.

For the second time this season, Rockcliffe fell agonisingly short chasing a large total; Staffield (220/5) with Robbie O’Neill (67) and Tony Threlkeld (50) best.

Rockcliffe (219/8) owed much to Ashley Wills (67) but were unable to get those vital two runs for the win, Steve Thomlinson (4/38) taking wickets at the vital time.

Stainton (185/10) made a solid start from their top-order but then lost their last eight wickets for just 17 runs; Dean Johnston (44); Callum Wilson (5/21) and Simon Wardlow (4/28) the bowlers doing the damage.

Lanercost (187/6) eased to victory with Craig Foster (50) and Callum Wilson (37 not out) to the fore.

Caldbeck (173/8) an under-par score at Temple Sowerby, would not have expected the onslaught from Lee Stockdale (106) - his first century with 10 sixes and nine fours which saw Temple Sowerby (174/4) reaching their target in just 25.1 overs.

In Division One, all games went true to form.

Leaders Scotby had a winning double-header weekend which sees them extend their lead at the top.

On Saturday, Scotby (160/7) beat Keswick 2s (60/10) by 100 runs. Keswick never recovering after losing their first three wickets without scoring.

Carlisle 3s (155/10), Cameron Westmorland (52) top-scoring, proved harder to beat on Sunday; Olly Driver (5/39), James Swann (3/37) restricting the home side.

Scotby (159/8) struggled early and were indebted to skipper Luke Jackman (48 not out) seeing them home; Luke Westmorland (3/29) best with the ball.

Edenhall (154/10) were too strong for Carlisle 3s (117/10) winning by 37 runs; Jamie Armstrong (60) top-scoring for Edenhall.

Carlisle struggled to cope with the experienced Andrew Gate (3/28), Tom Wentworth (3/27) and Rob Bland (3/18).

Wigton 2s continued their good run with a five-wicket win over Gamblesby.

Gamblesby (206/8) with Darren Coleman (52) and Luke Butler (55); Josh Dixon (4/28) and Tony Ward (3/48) best with the ball for Wigton.

Wigton (209/5) lost early wickets and Gamblesby must have thought a shock win was on the cards. Enter, Lewis Little (121 not out) who smashed 17 sixes and three fours in his match-winning knock.

Appleby Eden (149/10) had a comfortable home win over Wetheral (93/10) by 57 runs.

Marco Oliver, with 47 not out and 3/32, did his best to thwart the home side; Ryan Davidson (5/22) again in good form with the ball.

Prior to the game at Culgaith, both sides stood for a minute’s silence in memory of Neil Macrae, former captain, chairman and president of Appleby Eden CC, who passed away at the age of 85. Neil was well-known throughout cricket in the county, particularly by his friends at Carlisle and he will be sadly missed.

Carleton and Lanercost 2s enhanced their prospects of promotion from Division 2 with good wins.

Carleton (105/1) beat Patterdale (103/10) comfortably after the visitors chose to bat first.

Alex Smith (5/29) ripped out the early Patterdale batting with only Richard Kelso (25) contributing. Smith (47 not out) and Michael Rice (35 not out) then knocked off the runs in 15 overs to win by nine wickets.

Lanercost 2s (247/6) had Lawrence Baldwin (91) and Nathan Brown (53 not out) to thank for their total which proved too much for Kirkby Stephen II (153/10); Duncan Rose (58) the only real threat as Ryan Proud (4/34) and Daniel Cottrill (3/22) restricted the visitors.

Temple Sowerby 2s conceded their game to Irthing Vale.

On Sunday, Appleby 2s (132/7) beat Caldbeck 2s (131/10); George Winder (4/31) keeping the visitors in check; Steven Blake (34) best for Caldbeck.

Appleby got home thanks to Phil Brabbins (34) a last-minute call up, crossing swords with old class-mate of some 34 years ago, Steve Percival (3/16).

In the Junior Cup, holders Edenhall (233/3) beat Carlisle 4s (156/8) in a high-scoring Sunday morning game at Edenside; Mark Taylor (93 not out) for the visitors.

Sonu Kumar (55 not out) shone with the bat but Mark Taylor (3/17) was not to be out done on a return to his old stomping ground.

In the only Sunday League game played, Lanercost Colts (216/7) beat Keswick 3s (215/10) by three wickets; John Webster (52 not out) best for Keswick.

In reply, Lanercost batted solidly right down the order; Tom Murray (43) best. Jamie D’Leny (4/42) best with the ball for Keswick.
