Tokyo 2020 will be a Games like never before - but not for Team GB's most famous married couple.

Laura Kenny is gunning for treble gold in Tokyo, aiming to retain her Omnium and Team pursuit titles and also targeting success in the Madison, while husband Jason aims to add to his haul of six gold medals.

Laura gave birth to son Albie in 2017, since when her and Jason have travelled the competitions as a family.

But with questions remaining about whether Tokyo 2020 will accommodate overseas fans due to COVID-19, Laura will revert to type and stay apart from Jason as they did at their first two Games.

“Jason and I are just going to be team-mates again!” said Kenny, who is working with Purplebricks to encourage the nation to get behind Team GB on their journey to Tokyo.

“We obviously never used to stay together, but since Albie came along we’ve been able to travel as a family, with our parents as well who are there to help out when we’re competing.

“Even on holding camps close to events we’re all together, but the minute we’re on that plane to Japan we’ll be separated for one of the only times since we had Albie.

“It’s going to be funny and a bit strange because I’m so used to staying with Jase now, but it’ll just be like the experiences I’ve had at the Olympics before.”

While disappointed Albie won't be in attendance, Kenny - who also has seven world golds to her name - is more than happy to accept this in order to get the Games going.

And as someone who counts her support network as having had a huge influence on her roaring success so far, the Essex native is hopeful the home support drummed up by the Purplebricks campaign will help drive her over the line.

She said: “I’d love to have Albie over there because it would’ve been nice for him to see what all the build-up was for, and to experience the atmosphere. But he can still watch us on TV, and I’d much rather the Olympics actually goes ahead. It’s been five years in the making now!

News and Star:

“Nothing will ever compare to London because it was a home crowd, and I had my mum and dad with me in Rio. I’ll miss my family and friends this time [if they can’t be in Tokyo] but we’re already feeling the home support, and we’ll still be able to make phone calls and engage on social media.

“These Games are going to go down in history, and it’ll be nice to be part of that. The fact it has already been delayed is history in itself, and hopefully it can be an event that brings the whole world together.”
