Buxton just edged a tight encounter with Workington Reds in freezing conditions at Borough Park.

Reds took an early lead through a Dave Symington goal but Buxton came back to level through their skipper Joe Maguire in an even first half with both sides having their chances to try and edge ahead.

But in the second period, it was the visitors who looked the more dangerous and seemed to have the killer instinct.

They took the lead with 20 minutes remaining and they did not surrender it with Jude Oyibo proving a real thorn in the side of Reds, along with sub Ant Wilson.

Reds were nearly caught cold from the kick-off as the ball made an early appearance in their penalty area with Jude Oyibo hitting it goalwards but it was cleared by a scrambling defence.

And not to be outdone, Reds created some excitement of their own as Dave Symington swung in a deep free-kick towards the rising Josh Calvert who headed it back towards goal but Buxton cleared their lines.

As Buxton went on the attack again, they won a free-kick in a dangerous position. Liam Hardy put in a bullet header that had Aaran Taylor diving across his goal to save.

A long ball for Hardy to chase had Reds scampering back again with Sam Smith trying to slow him down. He got a shot in but it was blocked and cleared by Calvert.

Then play flew quickly back upfield as Mellen played a long ball into the path of Dave Symington. He took the ball into the area and finished well past the keeper to put Reds ahead.

Buxton had a good chance to draw level just moments later when Iyabo got in a dangerous cross that flew across the face of the goal.

Matty Douglas went to clear but missed the ball but, luckily, the chasing attackers could not reach it in time.

Both sides were keeping up the pressure and the pace of the game with the ball falling nicely for Danny Amos to unleash a shot but it went straight into the waiting arms of Taylor in the Workington goal.

Workington nearly doubled their lead just after the half-hour mark as a nice looping ball from Wilson found Steven Rigg in space.

But the keeper came out and put his body on the line to close him down to see the ball go out for a throw.

Reds tried again as the ball came back into play and a Wilson thunderbolt was blocked before Tinnion lofted the ball into the area but the keeper leaped up to hold.

Then, after a short spell of pressure, Buxton levelled matters when their new signing Callum Chippendale put in a nice cross and captain Joe Maguire was there to head home.

The home side looked to restore their advantage when Conor Tinnion curled in a free-kick that looked to try and sneak in at the far corner.

Rigg looked to try and help it on its way but the shot was scooped up by the keeper and a later effort from Wilson was also shy of the target.

There was action right up until the half-time whistle as Buxton got a late free-kick which was headed over the bar for a corner.

That ball came in dangerously again and Reds had to hook it away to stay level at the break.

Into the second half and there was danger for the home side as Buxton sub Ant Wilson was immediately into action with his shot being blocked off the line by Josh Calvert.

But then Wilson brought down Sam Smith with a bad tackle, earning himself a yellow card in the process.

Smith had to come to Reds' rescue as the half wore on, stretching to clear a dangerous ball over the top.

Symington had his chance to edge the home side back into the lead when he stood over a free-kick. He curled the ball into the area but it just shaved past the wrong side of the far post.

But within seconds Buxton had gone in front for the first time in the game. A blocked clearance fell right into the path of Ant Wilson.

And the super sub made no mistake as he went one-on-one with Taylor and rifled it past him, leaving the Reds keeper no chance.

Reds tried to strike back going into the last 15 minutes and they won two corners in succession but they couldn't trouble the Buxton keeper.

And Buxton broke away again with Hardy hitting the post as they looked to make sure of the points.

Reds had not given up and Rigg got in a good cross, looking for the run of Tinnion in the area, but he just couldn't get there before the keeper.

A late free-kick gave them hope and Tinnion put in a long ball but Wilson couldn't get on to the end of it and it flew out of play.

Symington danced through the defence to get a shot in himself but the keeper was up to the task as the game went into added time and the visitors held out.
