Former Carlisle United midfielder Adam Murray has been appointed caretaker manager at Championship strugglers Barnsley.

The 38-year-old, who made 52 appearances for the Blues in promotion-winning sides in 2005-6, has stepped up after the Oakwell club sacked boss Daniel Stendel.

Murray, the former Mansfield manager, has been with the Tykes since August last year as under-18s coach.

His first game in charge is set to be at home to Swansea on October 19.

In a two-sentence statement this morning Barnsley - 23rd in the Championship - said they had "separated from" Stendel with immediate effect.

The German had led the Yorkshire club to promotion last season but won just one of their first 11 league games this term.

Their campaign also included a 3-0 home defeat to Carlisle in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
